Event season is past approaching when Christmas functions, balls and end of year business events loom on the horizon.

If you’re attending one of these types of events, there is a good chance the dress code will be black tie. The traditional dinner suit or tuxedo as it is often called doesn’t leave a great deal of room for experimentation. It might seem out of step with the modern age where we are all encouraged to explore our individuality but the black tie event has strong traditions that have stood the test of time. There is something about a classic dinner suit that never goes out of fashion.

If you are looking for something a little bit different, then there are some subtle departures from wearing the standard black attire. One colour you could opt for is midnight blue. Worn by celebrities such as Eddie Redmayne and even James Bond, a midnight blue velvet dinner jacket offers a cool alternative as long as you wear it with black trousers and a pair of smart patent shoes.

It might surprise you to hear that wearing midnight blue for formal events is nothing new. Its history stretches back to the 1920s.
